    Humanscale chairs

    The Freedom, Liberty and World One LM use Niels Diffrient's weight-sensitive recline. The mechanism uses your own body weight as the counterbalance, so there is no tension dial to set and the chair is set correctly for whoever sits in it. That makes them as suited to shared desks and hot-desking as to a single owner.

    Also in limited clearance quantities: the Humanscale Path, designed with Todd Bracher around Humanscale's own Gravity Mechanism, which also uses your body weight as the counterbalance, with a recycled FormSense Eco Knit back; and the Humanscale Sedeo bar stool by Don Chadwick, a contoured seat shell on solid wood legs.

    Humanscale makes a substantial monitor-arm range, and we sell it: the current M2 Pro and M8 Pro, the M8 Pro Dual with crossbar and handle, and the M/Flex system with the M/Flex M2 Pro dual with sliders, plus the earlier-generation M2.1 and M8.1.     Which Humanscale chair should you buy?

    If one person will own the chair and sit in it all day, buy the Freedom: the counterbalanced recline and the headrest that tracks your head are what the rest of the range is built around. If you prefer mesh, the Liberty uses three mesh panels that shape themselves to your spine, so there is no lumbar adjustment to get wrong. If you are furnishing twenty desks, the World One LM keeps the same self-adjusting mechanism and the same 181 kg rating at a much lower price than the Freedom or the Liberty, which is why it turns up so often in our commercial fit-outs.     The warranty, product by product

    Humanscale's warranty is usually quoted as a flat 15 years, and that is not quite right. From Humanscale's published terms: the Freedom and the Liberty carry 15 years on the structure; the World One LM carries 12; fabric, cushions, arm pads, castors and wood carry 5 years on every chair; and the M2.1, M8.1, M2 Pro and M8 Pro monitor arms carry 15 years. None of those is a poor warranty, but a fit-out costed on a blanket 15 years across chairs and arms is costed on a figure that does not exist.     Which Humanscale Freedom configurations are available?

    The Freedom Headrest comes in black fabric on a graphite frame, in Ticino leather (Obsidian or Glacier White, on a graphite or polished base) and in Corvara saddle leather on polished aluminium. Current prices are shown on each product page.

    What is the difference between the Humanscale Freedom and the Liberty?

    The Freedom is an upholstered chair with a counterbalanced recline and a headrest that moves with you; it suits long days at one desk. The Liberty is a mesh chair whose tri-panel back forms to your spine, with no separate lumbar adjustment; it suits people who prefer mesh and want the chair to do the work. Both use the same weight-sensitive recline and both carry a 15-year structural warranty.

    What weight are Humanscale chairs rated to?

    Humanscale certifies the Freedom, the Liberty and the World One to 400 lb, which is about 181 kg. The rating is the same across the range, so stepping down from the Freedom to the World One does not cost you load capacity.     Which Humanscale chair is best for hot desking and shared offices?

    Any of them, because none needs a tension setting, but the World One LM is the one most often specified for volume: it keeps the full self-adjusting mechanism at the lowest price of the three chairs. Where budget allows, the Liberty adds the Form Sensing Mesh back.

    Do I need to adjust a Humanscale chair?

    Seat height and, on the Freedom, seat depth, armrests and headrest position. That is all. The recline tension is set by your own body weight, which is the point of the design and the reason a chair set up for one person is still right for the next.

    Is Humanscale's warranty really 15 years?

    For the Freedom and Liberty structure, yes. The World One LM is 12 years, and soft parts such as fabric, cushions, arm pads and castors are 5 years on every chair. Full terms are on our warranty page.
