Weight ratings are the least glamorous number on a specification sheet and the one most likely to cost someone a warranty claim. This guide explains what the number is, who tests it, and why the most expensive chair in a showroom is often not the highest-rated one.
Every figure quoted here comes either from the specifications published on our own product pages, from published manufacturer literature we cite by name, or from warranty terms we hold in writing. Where we do not hold a figure, the cell says so.
What a weight rating actually is
A published maximum user weight is not a snapping point. It is the load the chair was tested to survive across a defined programme of cyclic and static tests without structural failure, loss of function or loss of stability. The number is an engineering boundary drawn around a test regime, not a prediction of the moment the base cracks.
Three practical consequences follow.
First, a rating is only meaningful if you know which test programme produced it. “Rated to 140 kg” on its own is marketing. “Rated to 140 kg, tested to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017” is a specification, because the second half tells you what was actually done to the chair.
Second, the rating is a condition of the warranty, not a suggestion. It is usually written into the warranty in explicit terms, and we cover that below.
Third, watch for the difference between a certified maximum user weight, a maximum static load and a warranty condition. They are three different things and they are not interchangeable. A static load figure describes what the structure was loaded to in a bench test. A certified user weight describes the person the chair is warranted for across a full cyclic durability programme. A warranty condition is a term of cover written into the guarantee, which may exist even when the manufacturer publishes no capacity rating at all. European manufacturers publish static load figures more often than North American ones do, which is why a European chair can appear to out-rate an American one on paper without being the better answer to your requirement.
The two standards in play: ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and EN 1335
The RH Mereo 220 is one of the few chairs in our range whose published data cites the European and the American standard together.
Australia does not have a mandatory national office chair standard that displaces these two. In practice, the chairs sold here are tested to one, the other, or both, depending on whether the manufacturer’s primary market is North America or Europe.
ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 — General-Purpose Office Chairs
The American standard, maintained by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association. It is a durability and safety standard: roughly twenty tests covering cyclic durability of the seat, backrest, arms and castors, static load tests on arms, legs and footrests, and functional tests for stability, swivel, tilt mechanism and drop impact. Chairs are classified into three types by their mechanism — tilting; fixed seat angle with tilting backrest; and fixed seat and backrest.
The base test loads are drawn from a user of about 275 lb, roughly 125 kg, described by testing laboratories as a 95th percentile male. Manufacturers commonly test above that base level to claim a higher rating, which is how a chair arrives at a published figure of 140 kg or 181 kg.
The plain-language summary: X5.1 asks whether the chair will survive.
EN 1335 — Office Work Chair
The European standard, published in three parts.
- EN 1335-1 (Dimensions) specifies measurable dimensions and adjustment ranges, and groups chairs into size types with defined ranges for seat height, seat depth and backrest height.
- EN 1335-2 (Safety requirements) sets the safety criteria the chair must satisfy.
- EN 1335-3 (Test methods) sets out the laboratory procedures for verifying safety and strength.
The plain-language summary: EN 1335 asks whether the chair will survive and whether it will fit the user. That dimensional half has no equivalent in X5.1.
Two points of confusion worth clearing up. EN 1335-1 uses size types A, B and C for chair dimensions; those are unrelated to the Herman Miller Aeron’s sizes A, B and C, which are a manufacturer’s own frame sizes. Same letters, different systems. And the standard has been revised, so the edition matters: the HÅG Capisco 8106 is certified to EN 1335 (2020) Type A and Ax, while the Capisco Puls is certified to EN 1335 Type A under the 2000 edition. Same family of chairs, different editions of the same standard.
Which is better?
Neither, and a chair carrying both is telling you something useful. The RH Mereo 220 product data lists EN 1335, GS, NPR 1813, ANSI/BIFMA, Möbelfakta, EPD ISO 14025 and GREENGUARD GOLD. The RH Secur24 (sold as the BMA Secur24 before BMA Ergonomics merged into RH in January 2025) is listed with EN 1335, GS and BS 5459-2 — the last of those being the British standard for heavy-duty and 24-hour office seating, and a genuine point of difference if you are specifying for a control room. The HÅG Capisco 8106 carries EN 1335 (2020) Type A and Ax, ANSI/BIFMA, EN 16139 and GS. The Kyoto is approved to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017.
Who actually certifies a rating
This is where buyers are most often misled, and it is not usually anyone’s deliberate deception. Neither standard operates a compulsory certification mark. A manufacturer may have a chair tested by an independent laboratory and hold a report; or may test in-house against the standard’s methods and self-declare compliance. Both get described in a brochure as “tested to” the standard.
The question that separates them is simply: can you send me the test report? A manufacturer with third-party testing can. One that self-declares will offer a summary instead. Neither answer is disqualifying, but they are different levels of evidence, and for a tender you should know which you have.
The non-obvious part: a premium price does not come with a capacity figure
The Capisco is among the most heavily certified chairs we sell, and none of that certification is published as a user-weight number.
Here is the comparison that surprises most buyers, and it is not the one you expect.
Flokk publishes no maximum user weight for the HÅG Capisco. What it publishes is a warranty condition: unless a model states otherwise, HÅG’s warranty applies for users up to 110 kg. That is a term of cover, not a tested load rating, and the two are not the same thing. The Capisco is a heavily certified chair — EN 1335 (2020) Type A and Ax, ANSI/BIFMA, EN 16139 and GS on the 8106 — but none of that testing is published by Flokk as a user-weight number, so we do not publish one either.
Our own Kyoto task chair, at a fraction of the price, does publish one: 140 kg, approved to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017.
The Herman Miller Aeron publishes 136 kg, 159 kg and 181 kg across sizes A, B and C.
So the cheapest chair of the three is the one with the plainest published capacity figure, and one of the most expensive publishes none at all. That is not a defect and it is not a HÅG problem. It reflects different design intent and different national conventions about what gets published: a Capisco is a saddle chair built for active perching and postural change, engineered around movement rather than around maximum static load, and Flokk states a single warranty condition across the HÅG range rather than model-by-model capacity claims.
The lesson is the useful one. Brand prestige, price and published capacity are three separate variables, and some premium chairs publish no capacity figure at all. If capacity is a requirement in your specification — and in a 24/7 or multi-user environment it always should be — you have to read what the manufacturer actually publishes for the specific model, and check whether what you are reading is a certified user weight, a static load or a warranty condition. You cannot infer it from the badge.

Read the Secur24 row carefully. Static load and certified user weight are different measurements. A static load figure tests what a chair withstands under load; a certified user weight is tested to a standard such as ANSI/BIFMA X5.1. We will not present one as the other, so if you need a certified user weight for a specification, ask us and we will obtain it in writing.
What happens if you exceed the rating
The Control Master 24/7 is one of the few chairs whose product data ties the capacity figure to the warranty in a single sentence.
Two things, in this order.
The warranty goes first. Manufacturers write the weight limit into the warranty as a condition, and some say so in blunt terms — the Control Master product data states the 200 kg guarantee with “warranty void if this is exceeded” attached. Flokk’s 10-year HÅG warranty is expressed for normal use up to 9 hours per day for users up to 110 kg, dropping to 5 years beyond 9 hours per day; the weight limit and the hours limit sit in the same sentence, which is precisely why that 110 kg is a warranty condition and not a capacity rating. RH’s 10-year term is likewise stated for normal use of up to 9 hours per day for users up to 150 kg, with a separate 5-year term for RH chairs approved for control room 24/7 use.
Then the components go, and rarely with drama. Gas lifts start to sink under load rather than blowing out. Castors flat-spot and drag. Tilt mechanisms lose tension range, so the chair either resists recline or drops into it. Base spiders take a permanent set. All of these are gradual, all of them are the sort of thing a user tolerates for months, and all of them will be declined as claims if the chair was loaded past its rating.

What is the difference between ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 and EN 1335?
X5.1 is the American durability and safety standard: about twenty cyclic, static and functional tests asking whether the chair survives. EN 1335 is the European standard, published in three parts covering dimensions, safety requirements and test methods, so it asks whether the chair survives and whether its dimensions fit the user. Neither is inherently better, and a chair tested to both has been examined from two angles.
What is the difference between a maximum static load and a maximum user weight?
A maximum static load is the load the structure was taken to in a bench test. A certified maximum user weight is the person the chair is warranted for across a full cyclic durability programme, which includes repeated sitting, reclining and impact. The second is the number you should specify against. European manufacturers publish static load figures more often than North American ones, so the same chair can look higher-rated on a European spec sheet than on an American one without being a better fit for your requirement.
Does the HÅG Capisco have a maximum user weight?
Flokk publishes no maximum user weight for the HÅG Capisco. What it publishes is a warranty condition — unless a model states otherwise, HÅG’s warranty applies for users up to 110 kg — and a term of cover is not a tested load rating. The Capisco 8106 is certified to EN 1335 (2020) Type A and Ax, ANSI/BIFMA, EN 16139 and GS. Does exceeding the weight rating void the warranty?
Generally yes, and often in explicit terms. The Control Master 24/7 product data states its 200 kg guarantee with “warranty void if this is exceeded”. Flokk’s HÅG warranty is stated for users up to 110 kg and RH’s for users up to 150 kg. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are separate and cannot be excluded by any manufacturer’s warranty.
What is the highest-rated chair you sell?
It depends which number you mean. RH’s general published maximum user weight across its range is 150 kg. A larger maximum static load figure circulates for the Secur24 in pre-merger literature, but static load and certified user weight are different measurements, so we do not publish it as a capacity. Of the chairs with a published maximum user weight, the Control Master 24/7 leads at 200 kg, followed by the Herman Miller Aeron in size C and the Humanscale World One LM, both at 181 kg.
