    How to choose an executive office chair

    An executive chair has two jobs. It has to support a long working day as well as a serious task chair does, and it has to look right in a room where you meet clients. A high back and thick padding are not ergonomics on their own. Check that the mechanism keeps you moving rather than holding you in one position, that the seat depth adjusts to the length of your thighs, and that the back support reaches the right part of your spine.

    Two different approaches to movement

    The HÅG Tribute uses HÅG inBalance®, a balanced tilt that moves forwards and backwards with adjustable resistance and locks in three positions. Its lumbar support is height-adjustable, and the 9031 model we list has an adjustable headrest.

    The Humanscale Freedom Headrest in leather has no tension knob. Its recline uses your body weight to set the resistance, and the headrest and arms move with the backrest as you lean back. If several people share the chair, or you simply never adjust one, that matters.

    Leather or fabric

    Leather ages well and reads as more formal, but it is warmer to sit in through a Sydney summer if your office is not well cooled. Both chairs can also be ordered in fabric, so ask us if the room runs warm. Either way they are worth sitting in before you buy, which is what our Pyrmont showroom is for.

    Is an executive chair the right choice?

    An executive chair is the right choice when you want task-chair ergonomics in a chair that suits a private office or a room where you meet clients.

    If the chair will be used around the clock, in a control room or on shift rosters, look at chairs rated and warranted for that duty in our 24/7 chairs instead. If you mostly want adjustability for desk work and the look of the room matters less, our task chairs cover more options.

    Warranty terms differ by brand, and our warranty page sets them out brand by brand. Claims on chairs bought from Chair Dinkum are lodged through us. Manufacturer warranties are given in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is the difference between an executive chair and a task chair?

    Mostly materials and proportion: leather or premium upholstery, a higher back and a headrest. The mechanism underneath should still be a genuine ergonomic one. Both chairs we list here use the same kind of movement engineering as their makers' task chairs.

    Which is better for someone who does not want to adjust their chair?

    The Humanscale Freedom. Its recline uses your body weight to set the resistance, so there is no tension knob to wind. The HÅG Tribute gives you more manual control: adjustable tilt resistance, a three-position tilt lock and height-adjustable lumbar support.

    How long are these chairs warranted for?

    Flokk warrants the HÅG Tribute for 10 years for normal use up to nine hours a day, five years beyond that, with leather covered for five years. Humanscale warrants the Freedom for 15 years of 24/7 use, with upholstery, cushions, arm pads and castors covered for five years. Your Australian Consumer Law rights apply in addition.
