Humanscale M8.1

Heavy Screens, One Finger

The same spring counterbalance as the M2.1, built heavier: Humanscale's specification table rates it from 9 to 50 lb and to a 60-inch screen.

15-Year Warranty

Humanscale warrants the arm for 15 years against defects in materials and workmanship, and Chair Dinkum handles any claim in Sydney.

Takes a Crossbar

Add Humanscale's crossbar and one M8.1 post carries two screens — the cleanest way to get a dual setup out of a single desk fixing.

Humanscale M8.1 Monitor Arm

The Heavy One

The M8.1 is the M2.1's big brother: the same mechanical spring counterbalance and the same quick-release head, built to carry the screens the lighter arm cannot. Humanscale's specification table gives it a 9 to 50 lb range and a 60-inch maximum monitor width, against the M2.1's 5 to 22 lb and 44 inches, with an overall height range of 8 to 17.9 inches.

It is also the arm that takes Humanscale's crossbar, so a single post and a single desk fixing can carry two screens — which is why it ends up on trading desks, design studios and anywhere a 34-inch ultrawide has landed.

The Counterbalance

Setting It for Your Screen

Because the range is so wide, the M8.1 has a counterbalance indicator: you dial the arm to the weight of the screen you are hanging on it rather than guessing. Set it correctly and the screen floats; set it wrong and the arm either creeps up or sags, which is the single most common complaint about any monitor arm and is almost always a setup step that was skipped.

It takes about thirty seconds and the instructions walk through it. If you change screens, you reset it.

Five Things That Make It an M8.1

Heavy-Duty Counterbalance

The same mechanical spring counterbalance as the M2.1, built heavier. Humanscale's specification table rates it from 9 to 50 lb and to a 60-inch screen, against the M2.1's 5 to 22 lb and 44 inches.

A Dial, Not a Guess

Because the range is so wide, the M8.1 has a counterbalance indicator: you dial the arm to the weight of the screen you are hanging on it rather than guessing. It takes about thirty seconds, and you reset it if you change screens.

03

Quick-Release VESA Head

The same quick-release head as the rest of the range. Bolt the plate to the monitor once and the screen lifts on and off the arm without tools.

360° Rotation With a Stopper

Arm rotation is a full 360°, with an integrated stopper that can limit it to 90° or 180°. Screen pan is 180°; tilt is 80° up and 15° down.

Takes a Crossbar

Add Humanscale's crossbar and one M8.1 post carries two screens on a single desk fixing — up to 12 lb per screen and 12.7 kg (28 lb) in total. The crossbar is ordered separately.

Dimensions

The Numbers on the Drawing

Humanscale publishes the M8.1's dimension diagram rather than a reach figure in text. From its specification table: overall height 8 to 17.9 inches, arm rotation 360 degrees with an integrated stopper for 90 or 180 degrees, screen pan 180 degrees, tilt 80 degrees up and 15 degrees down, product weight 10.6 lb.

Humanscale's regional pages differ on capacity — the US marketing page says up to 28 lb for a single screen while the shop specification table says 9 to 50 lb. We show both; the table is the structured figure and the one we would plan a fit-out from.

This Listing

Two finishes: black with black trim (M81BTBC) and polished aluminium with white trim (M81BTWC). This is the single-arm, clamp-mount version. The crossbar for two screens and a grommet fitting are both available to order — call 02 9640 0642 and we will price the configuration you need.

For a standard office monitor the lighter M2.1 is usually the right arm and costs less.

Why We Stock It

Humanscale has been making monitor arms since the 1980s and its mechanism is the reason we keep selling them: a spring counterbalance with no gas cylinder to lose pressure, so the arm that holds position on day one still holds it in year ten. That is also why the warranty is 15 years rather than the two or three that is normal for this category.

Humanscale Australia holds the stock, so we are not guessing at lead times, and the range shares one VESA head and one set of desk fittings across the arms — useful when a floor has a mix of screen sizes. Call 02 9640 0642 for a floor quote, or visit our Pyrmont showroom at 1/209 Harris Street to see what is on the floor.

One Post, Two Screens

A single heavy-duty arm and one desk fixing can carry a dual-screen setup — and still be warranted for 15 years.

Figures are Humanscale's own, from its product pages and the shop specification tables linked above. Where Humanscale's marketing page and its specification table differ we show both and say which is which. Humanscale does not publish a VESA size or a desk-thickness figure for these arms, so neither is stated here — ask us on 02 9640 0642 and we will measure one in the showroom. Warranty terms are on Humanscale's warranty page and our warranty page. Humanscale's US page and its shop specification table give different screen-weight ceilings (28 lb against 50 lb); both are printed above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check three things: the screen's weight in kilograms (the number that matters most), its VESA hole pattern on the back, and your desk's thickness where the clamp goes. The weight range is in the specifications above; almost every office monitor is VESA 75 × 75 or 100 × 100. Humanscale's table gives 9 to 50 lb for this arm. Note the lower limit: a light screen on a heavy arm will float up, so if your monitor is under about 4 kg the M2.1 is the better choice. If your screen has no VESA holes, a VESA adapter plate is usually available for it — send us the model on 02 9640 0642 and we will check before you order.

Weight and screen size. Humanscale's tables give the M8.1 9 to 50 lb and a 60-inch maximum width, the M2.1 5 to 22 lb and 44 inches. Large ultrawides, heavy professional panels and anything with a chunky stand go on the M8.1; a standard 24 or 27-inch office monitor is happier on the M2.1, which also costs less.

Yes, with Humanscale's crossbar, which mounts to the M8.1 post and carries two monitors on one desk fixing. Humanscale publishes up to 12 lb per screen and up to 12.7 kg (28 lb) in total for that configuration. The crossbar is ordered separately — call 02 9640 0642 and we will quote the pair.

Ten minutes with the supplied hex key for one arm. The clamp or grommet fitting goes on the desk first, the post drops in, the arm slides on, then the screen clips to the VESA plate. The only step worth doing carefully is setting the spring tension to the screen's weight before you let go of it — the instructions cover it and the specifications above list the adjustment.

The spring tension is set for the weight of your screen. If the arm rises on its own the tension is too high; if it sags it is too low. Turn the adjuster in the direction marked until the screen stays wherever you put it. It is a normal setup step, not a fault, and it needs redoing whenever you change screens.

Humanscale publishes a 15-year warranty on this arm against defects in materials and workmanship in normal use. Claims come to Chair Dinkum on 02 9640 0642 and we lodge and manage them. Full terms are on Humanscale's site and our warranty page, and your Australian Consumer Law rights apply in addition.

Yes — visit our Pyrmont showroom at 1/209 Harris Street to see what is on the floor, and we can put a screen on an arm so you can feel the movement before you commit to a floor's worth. Call 02 9640 0642 first so we can have the one you want set up.
