A sit stand desk is only useful if you actually change position during the day, and the research is consistent that alternating between sitting and standing beats doing either one for eight hours. The desk is the easy part. Building the habit is the part most people skip.
Getting the setup right
Set your standing height so your elbows sit at roughly 90 degrees and the top of your screen is at eye level, which almost always means adding a monitor arm so the screen can follow the desk. Most people set their standing height too low and end up looking down, which defeats the purpose.
Alternate in reasonably short blocks rather than standing for a whole afternoon on day one. Our standing desk setup guide covers timing and the five mistakes we see most often.
Pair it with the right chair
A sit stand desk changes what you need from a chair. A high gas lift saddle chair such as the HAG Capisco lets you perch at standing height, which gives you a third position between sitting and standing. For a fuller comparison, see our sit stand desk buying guide.
