Premium Monitor Arms Compared: CBS Flo, Ergotron, Humanscale and Atdec

Most people choosing a premium monitor arm check one number: the maximum weight. Then they mount the screen and find it either sags toward the desk or springs upward every time they let go. Both faults share one cause — a monitor arm has a weight window, not a weight limit, and the minimum matters as much as the maximum.

This compares the arms an Australian buyer realistically shortlists: CBS Flo and Flo X, CBS Ollin, ZGONIC ZG1-DS, Ergotron LX and HX, Humanscale M2 Pro, M8 Pro and M/Flex, and Atdec's AWMS-HXB. Every figure comes from the manufacturer; where one has not published a figure, this article says "Not published".

The weight window: why the minimum decides the purchase

A gas-strut or spring arm holds your screen by releasing stored energy against the weight of the panel, tuned across a range. Inside that range you set tension to match the screen, it stays where you put it, and one finger moves it.

Outside the range, in either direction, the arm misbehaves in a predictable way:

  • Heavier than the maximum: the mechanism cannot generate enough counterforce, so the arm drifts downward. This is the failure everyone expects.
  • Lighter than the minimum: even at the lowest tension setting the mechanism pushes back harder than the screen weighs, so the arm rides up and will not stay down. This one nobody checks for, and it is not fixable — you have run out of adjustment.

The minimum trap catches two groups: people buying a heavy-duty arm "to be safe" for a normal 24in monitor, and people with a large but light panel. The Ergotron HX is the clearest example here — rated to 49in, but its range starts at 9.1 kg, so a 49in panel weighing 8 kg is too light for it.

So the first thing to establish is not the brand. It is what your screen weighs without its stand, from the manufacturer's specification sheet.

One thing stands out: Humanscale publishes the least dimensional data of any brand here. No reach, no vertical travel, no tilt or pan degrees and no warranty term on the M2 Pro, M8 Pro or M/Flex pages. Humanscale is a serious manufacturer, but if you want to know whether an arm reaches across your desk, that information is not published. CBS and Ergotron publish the most and are the easiest to size without ringing anyone.

On warranty, CBS Flo, Flo X and Ollin carry 12 years, ZGONIC ZG1-DS a limited 10 years, and Ergotron and Atdec 10 years; Humanscale publishes no term on these product pages, though its Terms and Conditions PDF references a 10-year, 24/7 warranty on certain arms with gas cylinder components. What we cover is on our warranty page. The M2 Pro supersedes the M2.1 and the M8 Pro the M8.1. The old models did publish metric figures — M2.1 at 2.3–7 kg flat and 2.3–5.7 kg curved, M8.1 at 2.7–12.7 kg — but those are superseded numbers and should not be used to size a Pro.

The M/Flex contradiction

M/Flex carries up to six monitors. On how heavy each may be, Humanscale's own materials disagree: the M/Flex page states a 20 lb maximum per monitor, while the index listing M/Flex with the M8 Pro gives 9–50 lb. We will not guess which is right. The non-tech base is listed at 90 lb combined, with only 30 lb permitted above 18in. Specifying an M/Flex for heavy panels? Ask Humanscale and get it in writing.

The mechanism question, answered honestly

Ask around online and you will be told gas struts degrade and springs do not. Here is what manufacturers actually state about their own mechanisms.

  • Ergotron calls its mechanism Constant Force and describes it explicitly as a coiled spring, not gas.
  • Atdec states plainly that its arms are counterbalanced with a gas strut.
  • CBS states spring: Flo uses Dual Rate Spring Technology, a mechanical spring, and Flo X uses dual spring technology.
  • Humanscale contradicts itself. Its marketing pages describe weight-compensating spring technology, while its own Terms and Conditions PDF lists "M4, M7 & M8 Monitor Arms with Gas Cylinder Components | 10 Years, 24/7 Warranty". We will not call Humanscale arms spring-only when its warranty document refers to gas cylinder components. If the mechanism matters to you, ask Humanscale.

Now the part that gets stated as fact and is not: no manufacturer in this comparison publishes cycle-life or durability data, and no manufacturer states that its mechanism loses tension over time. "Gas struts degrade, springs don't" is a plausible engineering argument. It is not a citable specification, and we will not repeat it as one.

What is documented is less dramatic. Ergotron's user guide says that if the arm "does not stay up when raised, then you'll need to increase Lift Strength", and that this should be repeated "any time equipment is added or removed". That is setup and load-change maintenance — the same tightening you do after swapping a 24in panel for a 27in one — not evidence of wear.

Which arm for which screen

Standard 24–27in monitors

These usually land between 3 kg and 7 kg without their stand — the sweet spot for almost every arm here. The CBS Flo at 2–7 kg is built for this class, and its 483 mm of vertical travel is the most generous in the comparison. The ZGONIC ZG1-DS at 3–11 kg covers the same screens with more headroom, and the Ergotron LX at 3.2–11.3 kg is the long-standing benchmark. Avoid the Ergotron HX here: its 9.1 kg minimum makes it the wrong tool for a 5 kg monitor. Running two panels? 34in ultrawides

Here weight separates the arms. CBS Flo is rated to 34in and 1000R curvature but only to 7 kg — check your panel against that ceiling. ZGONIC ZG1-DS covers 17–34in at 3–11 kg. CBS Ollin runs 0–9 kg with the longest published reach here, 674 mm, though CBS publishes no maximum screen size in inches for it, so we cannot call it a 34in arm. Ergotron LX lists 34in to 11.3 kg.

49in 32:9 super-ultrawides

Three arms here are credible, each with a catch. CBS Flo X is the only one whose manufacturer names the exact format — flat or curved up to 49in at 32:9 — with a 3–18 kg range that brackets every panel in the class. Ergotron HX handles 49in at 9.1–19.1 kg, but that minimum rules out lighter 49in panels. Atdec's AWMS-HXB is rated to 49in, but curved capacity drops from 16 kg to 12 kg, and almost every 49in 32:9 panel is curved. CBS Flo, ZGONIC ZG1-DS and Ergotron LX are 34in arms and are not suitable.

Heavy and deep panels

Ergotron publishes a caveat worth quoting: "Monitor depth greater than 2.5in (64 mm) may diminish capacity", and LX lift is "decreased up to 4.5in (114 mm) when arm is adjusted to hold over 20 lbs". A deep panel can behave like a heavier one and cost you travel. Ergotron's HX curved note — "6–12in deep, 28–42 lbs" — points the same way. For heavy work, HX (19.1 kg) and Flo X (18 kg) are the highest published capacities here.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my monitor is lighter than the arm's minimum weight?

The arm rides up and will not stay in a low position. At the lowest tension setting it still pushes back harder than the screen weighs, so there is no adjustment left. The only fix is an arm with a lower minimum.

Should I use the weight on my monitor's box?

No. Box weight includes the stand, packaging and often cables. Use the manufacturer's specification sheet figure for the panel without its stand — that is what the arm holds.

Do gas strut arms wear out faster than spring arms?

There is no published data either way. No manufacturer here publishes cycle-life or durability figures, and none states that its mechanism loses tension over time. The claim is a common engineering argument, not a documented fact.

Why does my arm need retensioning?

Because the load changed, or it was not set correctly at installation. Ergotron's user guide says that if the arm does not stay up when raised you need to increase Lift Strength, and to repeat that any time equipment is added or removed. Normal maintenance on any mechanism.

Which arm handles a 49in 32:9 screen?

CBS Flo X (3–18 kg, and the only one whose manufacturer names the 49in 32:9 format), Ergotron HX (9.1–19.1 kg, but check your panel is not below the 9.1 kg minimum), and Atdec AWMS-HXB (49in, though curved capacity drops to 12 kg). CBS Flo, ZGONIC ZG1-DS and Ergotron LX are all 34in arms and will not do it.
