If you have shopped for a Herman Miller Aeron in Australia you will have noticed that the same chair carries very different prices depending on who is selling it, and that nobody explains why. The gap is not small, it is not a sale, and it is not a sign that one of the chairs is fake. It comes down to how the chair got into the country and who is standing behind it afterwards.

What "parallel import" actually means
A parallel import is a genuine, brand-new, manufacturer-made product bought through a legitimate channel in one country and sold in another, outside the brand's appointed distributor for that second country. It is sometimes called grey import, which is an unhelpful name because it sounds like a legal grey area. It is not. Parallel importing is lawful in Australia and has been for a long time.
The word doing the work is route, not product. A parallel-imported Aeron came off the same production line as an Aeron bought anywhere else, in the same factory, to the same specification. What differs is the paperwork that travelled with it.
- The chair is the same chair. Same frame, same 8Z Pellicle, same PostureFit SL, same tilt mechanism.
- The price is lower, because the authorised channel in any country carries costs the parallel route does not — territory distribution rights, dealer margins, layers of local marketing. The saving is in the route, not in the chair.

The risk that actually matters is counterfeit, not parallel
There is a great deal of counterfeit Herman Miller sold into Australia, mostly through marketplace listings and drop-ship sites. A counterfeit Aeron is not a cheaper Aeron. Herman Miller's published term for the Aeron, quoted verbatim from its own specifications page, is a "12-year, 3-shift warranty, with limited exceptions". Three-shift means round-the-clock use rather than a single working day. That warranty is Herman Miller's, administered through Herman Miller's own network.

We are not going to publish a competitor's price on this page. Authorised pricing moves, and a number we quote today is a number that misleads someone in six months. Compare it yourself on the day you buy — it takes a minute, and we are comfortable with what you will find.
What the law adds, and what nobody can take away
Every warranty discussed above sits on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, and those rights cannot be excluded by any seller, any warranty document, or any statement on any website including this one.
The wording we are required to give you, and do: "You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage." Consumer guarantees apply regardless of what any manufacturer warranty says.
Two practical consequences worth knowing. First, the guarantees attach to the supplier who sold you the goods — so on a chair bought from us, your statutory rights run against an Australian business with an Australian address, rather than a manufacturer overseas. Second, a consumer guarantee lasts for a period that is reasonable given the price and the nature of the goods, which on a chair costing over two thousand dollars is not a short period. Anyone who tells you a $2,000 chair is out of options because a twelve-month warranty lapsed is wrong.

Which Herman Miller, briefly
This page is about the commercial side rather than the models, and we have written the model comparisons out properly elsewhere. The short version:

Two notes. Herman Miller's public specifications page does not list a weight capacity — the figures above come from its size and fit reference document, which is why you will see them quoted inconsistently around the web. And the Aeron tops out at 579 mm of seat height, so it cannot be used at a standing desk. Specifying for a project, a tender or a rollout
Most of what follows is a five-minute phone call rather than a problem, and we would rather have the call early than late.
- Tenders and procurement schedules. Some schedules name the warrantor. - A configuration you cannot see listed. The website shows what is on the floor, not the limit of what we can get. Tell us the arm, base, castor and textile combination you want and we will tell you what is possible and what it costs.
- Multi-site or multi-year rollouts. If you are fitting out over several years and need the chair in year four to match the chair in year one, talk to us at the start. We can plan the import around your program rather than the other way round.
- Volume pricing. The prices above are single-chair prices. Anything at fit-out scale is a conversation, and it is one worth having.
