Monitor Arms for Heavy, Curved and Ultrawide Screens in Australia
Someone buys a monitor arm rated "up to 9 kg", mounts an 8 kg 49in panel on it, and within a week the screen has crept downward. The weight was inside the limit. The arm still failed.
It failed because a weight rating alone does not describe what a large screen does to an arm. Two other forces are at work: leverage, and where the mass sits. Get those wrong and a compliant panel behaves like an overweight one. Here is how to size an arm for a 34in ultrawide, a 49in 32:9 or a heavy professional panel.
Why "under the limit" is not the same as "supported"
A weight rating is measured under specific conditions. Extend the arm to full reach and the same mass exerts far more turning force on the joints and the desk mount than it does folded in close. An 8 kg screen at 600 mm of extension loads the mechanism much harder than the same screen 200 mm from the pole.
Curved panels add a second problem: a curved screen wraps its mass forward around the mounting plate rather than sitting flat against it, pushing the centre of mass further out. That is why several manufacturers publish two capacities. Atdec's AWMS-HXB is rated to 16 kg flat but 12 kg curved — a quarter less, from curvature alone. CBS gives Flo a curvature limit of 1000R, a specification about geometry rather than weight.
Ergotron makes the depth version of the same point: "Monitor depth greater than 2.5in (64 mm) may diminish capacity." A deep chassis moves mass forward exactly as curvature does, and Ergotron's HX note for curved screens — "6–12in deep, 28–42 lbs" — is a depth window as well as a weight window. The practical rule: if your screen is curved or deep, or you will run the arm near full extension, treat the published maximum as a ceiling to sit below, not a target.
Find your monitor's true weight — this is where most people go wrong
The most common sizing mistake is the wrong weight number. Three figures circulate for any monitor, and only one matters.
- Shipping or box weight. Includes the stand, packaging, cables, power brick and carton. This is the number on the retail listing and the outside of the box, and it is the wrong one.
- Weight with stand. Panel plus factory stand. Also wrong — the stand is what you are removing.
- Weight without stand (sometimes "display only" or "head only"). This is the number the arm has to hold.
Find it on the manufacturer's specification sheet for your exact model number, not a retailer listing. Look for "without stand", "excluding stand" or "display only". If only one weight is published and it does not say which, ring them — a guess here is what puts an 8 kg panel on a 7 kg arm. While the spec sheet is open, check the panel's depth and, if curved, its radius.
VESA: the pattern, and when you need an adapter
VESA is the standard hole pattern on the back of a monitor, measured in millimetres between hole centres. Most desktop monitors use 75 x 75 mm or 100 x 100 mm, and CBS Flo, Flo X, Ollin, ZGONIC ZG1-DS and the Ergotron LX all support both. The Ergotron HX supports VESA MIS-D, MIS-E and MIS-F — the standard's naming for progressively larger patterns. Atdec does not publish VESA sizes on the AWMS-HXB / AWM-AHX pages. Two complications hit large screens:
- Larger patterns. Many big panels use 200 x 100 mm or larger. If your arm is 75/100 only you need an adapter plate — and confirm the adapter's own weight rating, because it becomes part of the load path.
- No VESA holes at all. Some consumer ultrawides and 49in panels ship with a proprietary stand mount and no VESA pattern, or with holes recessed so deeply a standard plate will not sit flat. Some manufacturers sell a first-party adapter; some do not. Check before you buy the arm.
Which arms genuinely handle a 49in 32:9
CBS Flo X — 3–18 kg
Flo X is the only arm here whose manufacturer names the exact format: flat or curved up to 49in at 32:9. Horizontal reach 612 mm, vertical travel 328 mm, 180°/360° stop, VESA 75/100, dual spring technology, UK designed, 12-year warranty. The 3 kg minimum is low enough that no realistic 49in panel falls under it, and 18 kg leaves headroom. Mounting is split clamp 9–45 mm or top-mount 12–25 mm. Ergotron HX — 9.1–19.1 kg, and watch the minimum
The HX is rated to 49in with the highest published capacity here, 19.1 kg (42 lb). Lift 292 mm, extension 594 mm, tilt +15°/−5° standard or +70°/−5° on the HD Pivot variant, pan 360°, base rotation 180°, VESA MIS-D/E/F, clamp 10–51 mm, grommet under 16 mm, and a 10-year warranty.
The trap is the minimum. HX starts at 9.1 kg (20 lb), and plenty of 49in 32:9 panels weigh less than that once the stand is off. Put a 7 kg screen on an HX and it rides upward and will not stay low, with no tension adjustment left to fix it. Check your without-stand weight against 9.1 kg first: this is a heavy-panel arm that is also rated to 49in, not a 49in arm generally.
Atdec AWMS-HXB / AWM-AHX — 49in, but 12 kg curved
Atdec rates this arm to 49in, 16 kg flat and 12 kg curved, with tilt −30° to +35°, pan ±90°, a 180° rotation limiter and a 10-year warranty. Since nearly every 49in 32:9 panel is curved, 12 kg is the figure that applies. Atdec states plainly that the arm is counterbalanced with a gas strut. Reach, vertical travel and VESA sizes are not published, so if desk depth is tight, ask Atdec directly. Atdec is an Australian company, Sydney-based since 1998.
Which arms are not suitable, and why
- CBS Flo — up to 34" and 2–7 kg. Both size and weight rule out a 49in panel.
- ZGONIC ZG1-DS — 17–34" at 3–11 kg. A 49in screen is outside its published size range regardless of weight.
- Ergotron LX (standard pole) — max 34", 3.2–11.3 kg. Same reason.
- Humanscale M2 Pro — max 43" at 5–22 lb, so a 49in panel is out. The M8 Pro is rated to 65" at 9–50 lb, but Humanscale publishes no reach, vertical travel or tilt figures for it, which makes it hard to size against your desk.
The 34in ultrawide case
34in ultrawides are easier to accommodate, but weight varies enormously between models, so the spec sheet still decides. CBS Flo is rated to 34" and 1000R at 2–7 kg, with 584 mm reach and 483 mm of vertical travel — the most generous here. ZGONIC ZG1-DS covers 17–34" at 3–11 kg, 600 mm reach, 290 mm vertical, 360° swivel with a patent-pending Dial-Stop 180°/360° lock and tilt 20° forward, 35° back. CBS Ollin has the longest reach, 674 mm, at 0–9 kg for a single screen — though CBS publishes no maximum screen size in inches for it. For two ultrawides, CBS Flo dual applies the 2–7 kg window to each screen.
The desk side of the problem

A clamp works only within its published range, and heavy-screen buyers often have thick desks:

Note the Flo X clamp starts at 9 mm, not 0 mm, so a very thin desktop that suits a standard Flo may not suit a Flo X. The Ergotron HX grommet option needs a desk under 16 mm, thinner than many desks the HX would otherwise suit.
Can the desk itself take it?
The arm is only half the structure. A 12 kg panel at 600 mm of extension applies serious leverage to a small patch of desktop; thin laminate over particleboard, glass tops and unsupported overhangs are all poor candidates. Clamp over solid material, near a leg or frame member. On a sit-stand desk, check its rated capacity covers panel plus arm and re-check stability at standing height.
Cable management
Large panels carry heavy cables, and stiff cabling fights the arm. Cable that is too tight adds a downward pull that reads as sag; too loose and it snags. Route through the arm's own channels where they exist — the ZGONIC ZG1-DS has semi-concealed cable management built in, in Black or White — and leave a service loop at the VESA plate so the screen can rotate without tugging.
Setting tension after mounting
Set lift tension to the actual screen. Ergotron's user guide is explicit: if the arm "does not stay up when raised, then you'll need to increase Lift Strength", repeated "any time equipment is added or removed". Ergotron also notes lift range is "decreased up to 4.5in (114 mm)" above 20 lbs, so a heavy screen can cost travel at the bottom.
Frequently asked questions
My arm is rated above my screen's weight but the screen still sags. Why?
Usually one of three things: you checked box weight rather than panel weight, the lift tension was never set for the actual load, or the arm runs near full extension where leverage multiplies the load. Curved and deep panels worsen the third by pushing mass forward of the VESA plate.
Where do I find my monitor's weight without the stand?
On the manufacturer's specification sheet or support page for your exact model, listed as "without stand", "excluding stand" or "display only". Do not use box or shipping weight, which includes the stand, cables and packaging.
Do curved monitors need a different arm rating?
Some manufacturers publish a separate, lower figure for curved panels. Atdec rates the AWMS-HXB to 16 kg flat but 12 kg curved. CBS specifies Flo for flat or curved to 1000R. Where a curved figure is published, use it.
Which arm should I buy for a 49in 32:9 monitor?
CBS Flo X (3–18 kg) is the only one whose manufacturer names the 49in 32:9 format. Ergotron HX covers 49in at 9.1–19.1 kg, but check your panel is not below its 9.1 kg minimum. Atdec AWMS-HXB is rated to 49in but drops to 12 kg curved, which is most of them.
Will my 49in monitor fit a VESA 75/100 arm?
Not necessarily. Many large panels use a larger pattern such as 200 x 100 mm, and some ship with a proprietary mount and no VESA holes at all. Check your monitor's pattern first, and if an adapter is needed confirm its own weight rating as well as the arm's.
