The HAG Gas Lift Unblocking Tool is a hardened steel ring that fits around the gas lift column of your Capisco chair. Used with a rubber mallet, it separates the gas lift from the seat mechanism so you can replace a worn or sinking cylinder.

Gas lifts are held in place by a tapered friction fit. Over years of use, body weight presses the taper tighter, making it impossible to remove by hand. This tool provides a flat striking surface that distributes force evenly around the column, releasing the fit without damaging the mechanism or base.

What you need

  • This unblocking tool
  • A rubber mallet (or hammer with a wood block)
  • Your replacement HAG Capisco Gas Lift

Compatible with HAG Capisco 8106, Capisco Puls 8010, and Capisco Puls 8020.

The Essential Tool for Gas Lift Replacement

Purpose-Built

Designed specifically for HAG gas lift cylinders. Grips the column without scratching or damaging the finish.

One-Time Purchase

Hardened steel construction lasts a lifetime. Buy once and use it every time you need to swap a gas lift.

5-Minute Job

No need to call a technician. Remove your old gas lift yourself in under 5 minutes with this tool and a rubber mallet.

How to use

The unblocking tool separates the gas lift cylinder from the chair base. Over time, the gas lift becomes wedged tightly into the base due to body weight and friction. This tool provides the leverage needed to release it without damaging the base or mechanism.

  1. Turn the chair upside down so the base faces up.
  2. Remove the star base from the gas lift column (pull firmly or tap with a rubber mallet).
  3. Place the unblocking tool around the gas lift column, resting it on top of the seat mechanism.
  4. Tap the tool firmly with a rubber mallet. The gas lift will drop out of the mechanism.
  5. Insert your new gas lift into the mechanism (it drops in, no tools needed).
  6. Reattach the star base by pressing it onto the gas lift column.

Tip: If the gas lift is very stuck, apply a small amount of penetrating oil (WD-40) around the join and wait 10 minutes before trying again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The gas lift is held in place by a friction fit (a tapered cone pressed into the mechanism housing). Without this tool, you cannot safely separate the two parts. Attempting to use a screwdriver or chisel risks damaging the mechanism or base.

This tool is designed for HAG gas lift columns. Most office chair gas lifts use a similar tapered fit, so it may work on other brands, but we cannot guarantee compatibility. The inner diameter is sized for HAG cylinders specifically.

A rubber mallet (or a regular hammer with a piece of wood to protect the tool). That is all. The whole job takes about 5 minutes once you have the chair flipped over.
