Under a thousand dollars is where most office chairs are actually bought, and it is the price band with the worst information. The market is full of chairs described entirely in adjectives — ergonomic, premium, breathable — with no published measurement, no standard named and no warranty you could read.
We stock four chairs under $1,000 and we hold more than 600 of them between the four. Here they are compared on what their manufacturers actually publish, with the two figures that decide the choice for most people, and a straight answer about which one to buy for which job.
The two figures that decide it
Before the tables, the shortcut. At this price the chairs are more alike than the marketing suggests, and the choice usually comes down to two things:
- The minimum seat height, because a chair that will not go low enough is a chair you cannot use, and no other feature compensates. Our four range from 390 mm to 470 mm at the bottom — an 80 mm spread, which is the difference between your heels on the floor and dangling.
- Whether the seat depth adjusts, because femur length varies more between people than almost any other dimension, and a fixed seat depth either fits you or presses behind your knees for eight hours.
Get those two right and everything else is preference.

Our own brand, which is why it is the cheapest thing here with a published weight rating. Synchronised recline, 4D armrests, height-adjustable flexing lumbar, a seat depth slider, high-density moulded foam seat and a fire-retardant Korean Wintex cotton mesh back.

The 140 kg is the headline. It is a tested figure against a named standard, and it is the only published maximum user weight among these four — the HÅG chairs have none, for reasons explained below. If somebody in your office needs a documented capacity, this is the chair at this price that has one.
The 470 mm minimum seat height is the catch. It is the highest starting point of the four by 80 mm. For most adults at a standard 720–730 mm desk that is fine; for a shorter sitter it is the reason to look at one of the others. Sit in it before you order forty.
Warranty is ours: 10 years on the structural frame, base and gas lift, given by Chair Dinkum, with normal wear and tear excluded. HÅG Tion 2100 — from $588.75
The entry point into HÅG, and the cheapest chair here. Norwegian design from the Flokk group, built around the same balanced-tilt philosophy as the rest of the HÅG range.

The Tion is a genuinely good chair with a genuine limitation: no Tion model has an adjustable seat depth. Flokk's factsheet row is empty. That is why it is certified EN 1335 Type B rather than Class A — a lower adjustability tier, which is a fact about the specification rather than a criticism of the chair. If your femurs are average, you will never notice. If they are not, you will notice on day one.

A word about maximum user weight
This row deserves explaining, because it looks like the HÅG chairs are worse and they are not.
Flokk publishes no maximum user weight for any HÅG chair. The 110 kg figure that circulates is a condition of the ten-year guarantee, not a tested load rating, and the two are different measurements. We will not print it as a capacity because it is not one.
The Kyoto's 140 kg is a tested figure against ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017. So if you need a documented capacity — for a workplace assessment, a tender, or simply peace of mind — the Kyoto is the chair here that has one on paper. That is a real difference in documentation, not necessarily a real difference in strength. Warranty, and who actually stands behind it
All four carry ten years, but not from the same party, and it is worth knowing which.
- Kyoto — the warranty is given by Chair Dinkum, 1/209 Harris Street, Pyrmont NSW 2009, covering the structural frame, base and gas lift against defects in materials and workmanship for ten years from the date of purchase. We bear the expense of claiming, including return freight on approved claims. Because it is our own brand, a claim is a phone call to us and nothing else.
- HÅG Tion and SoFi — Flokk's ten-year guarantee against production defects in normal use up to nine hours a day, dropping to five years beyond that, with fabrics and leather at five years and normal wear excluded. Flokk also guarantees spare parts availability for a minimum of ten years from the chair's production date, and we handle claims here.
All of it sits on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. What another thousand dollars would buy
Worth knowing where the ceiling of this band sits, because the honest answer is that these four cover most people and the money above them buys something specific rather than something generally better.
- A HÅG Capisco at $1,858 buys the saddle position and a chair that perches at standing-desk height — which none of the four here will do.
- A Herman Miller Aeron at $2,150 buys three sizes rather than one adjustable shell, and full mesh.

What is the difference between EN 1335 Class A and Type B?
They are adjustability tiers in the European office chair standard. Class A is the higher tier and requires a greater range of adjustment, including adjustable seat depth. The HÅG SoFi Mesh is certified Class A; the HÅG Tion range is certified Type B, which follows from the Tion having no seat depth adjustment. It is a fact about the specification rather than a judgement on build quality.
