    Choosing an office chair

Start with how long you sit. If you are at a desk for six hours or more a day, prioritise a chair with a proper weight-sensitive or adjustable recline, because a chair that fights you when you lean back will keep you upright and static all day. The HÅG Capisco and the Humanscale Freedom both handle this well, from opposite design philosophies: the Capisco encourages you to change posture constantly, while the Freedom quietly adjusts to you.

Then think about who will use it. A chair shared by people of different heights needs a wide adjustment range; a chair for one person only has to fit that person well. Our guide to choosing an ergonomic task chair works through the trade-offs model by model.

    Fit comes before features

Seat height and seat depth decide whether a chair will work for you, and they vary more between models than most people expect. Most chairs adjust to suit a range of bodies, while the Herman Miller Aeron comes in three sizes, A, B and C, so the fit is chosen when you buy. If you are shorter or taller than average, our guides to office chairs for short people and office chairs for tall people compare the published figures for the chairs we stock.

    Mesh, upholstery or leather

Mesh backs suit warmer rooms and anyone who runs hot. Fully upholstered chairs such as the HÅG Tion 2160 are warmer and quieter, and tend to suit shared or client-facing spaces better. Leather is found mostly on executive chairs. Our comparison of fabric, mesh and leather sets out the differences in more detail.

    Task, executive or 24/7?

Most chairs here are task chairs: built for desk work and adjusted to the person using them. If you want a high back and leather for a private office, see our executive office chairs. For control rooms and other workplaces where a chair is in use around the clock, choose from our 24/7 and control room chairs. If you work at a high desk or bench, or want to sit more actively, start with the HÅG Capisco range.

    The brands we stock

Chair Dinkum is the exclusive Australian importer and distributor for Flokk, the group behind HÅG and RH, and warranty claims on those chairs are handled here in Sydney. We also sell Herman Miller, Humanscale, LiberNovo and KAB Seating, along with Kyoto, our own ergonomic chair.

    Warranty

Warranty terms differ by brand and model: the length, what is covered, and conditions such as hours of use or user weight all vary. The Herman Miller chairs we sell are supplied as an international parallel import, so the cover on them is our own 12-year Chair Dinkum warranty rather than Herman Miller's. Our warranty page sets out the terms brand by brand, and your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply on top of any warranty.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an office chair, a task chair and an ergonomic chair?

The terms overlap. An office chair is any chair made for desk work. A task chair is an office chair designed to be adjusted to the person using it for long periods at a desk, and most chairs in this range are task chairs. "Ergonomic" describes how well a chair can be fitted to your body, through seat height, seat depth, armrests and recline. Our guide to what makes a chair ergonomic explains the principles.

How do I know a chair will fit me?

Compare a chair's published seat height and seat depth with your own measurements, and check whether its armrests come close enough to your sides. The Herman Miller Aeron is sized A, B or C, so the size you choose matters more than the adjustments. Our guides to office chairs for short people and tall people compare the figures, or you can sit in them at our Pyrmont showroom.

Should I choose mesh or an upholstered chair?

Mesh stays cooler and suits warm rooms and people who run hot. Upholstered chairs are warmer and quieter and often suit shared or client-facing spaces. It is mostly a comfort and style choice rather than an ergonomic one; our materials guide goes into detail.

Can I try a chair before I buy?

Yes. Our showroom at 1/209 Harris Street, Pyrmont is open Monday to Friday by appointment. Book a time or call 02 9640 0642 and tell us which chairs you would like to try, so we can make sure they are on the floor.

    Do you deliver Australia-wide?

Yes. We deliver to most residential and business addresses across Australia. Shipping is calculated on size, weight and destination and shown at checkout. Some chairs are ordered in for each customer, so lead times vary by model; the product page or our team can confirm timing.

Can you supply chairs for an office fit-out?

Yes. We supply businesses, government and fit-out projects, from a few chairs to whole floors, and we are a registered supplier on the NSW Government's buy.nsw platform. See our commercial office chairs page, or contact us with your numbers.
