The Idea
Hang It in Plain Sight
Most coat stands are designed to disappear. The Hanger was designed to be looked at. Neri&Hu started from the idea that a coat or a bag is better hung out in the open, where the air moves around it, than shut inside a wardrobe, and that the object doing the hanging deserves the same care as the rest of the room.
The result is a tall, quiet form that works as a piece of sculpture when it is empty and as a piece of furniture when it is not.
Materials
Steel, Concrete and Leather
The frame is tubular steel in a black textured lacquer. It rises from a round concrete base, also black, that weighs around 6.5 kg on its own and keeps the stand steady with a winter coat and a bag on it. The hooks are leather straps rather than metal pegs, so the part you touch is soft and the garment is held gently.

The Designers
Designed by Neri&Hu
Neri&Hu is the Shanghai architecture and design studio founded by Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu. Their work runs from buildings and interiors to furniture for European manufacturers, and much of it starts with the same question: what does an ordinary object become if you take it seriously?
The Hanger was their answer for Offecct. It was first shown at Clerkenwell Design Week in London in 2016 and has been in production since 2017.

No. It is freestanding. The concrete base weighs around 6.5 kg on its own, which is what keeps an 1800 mm stand steady with coats and bags on it. Place it where you want it and move it when the room changes.
