Chair Dinkum is the exclusive Australian distributor for the Flokk group, which owns HAG — so Capisco chairs, gas lifts, footrings and warranty support in Australia come through us. See our Flokk Australia page for the group and all eleven brands.

The HAG Capisco was designed by Peter Opsvik in 1984 around the posture of a rider on horseback, and it is still the most genuinely different office chair you can buy. The saddle seat lets you sit facing forwards, sideways, astride or perched high, and switch between those positions without thinking about it.

Who it suits

The Capisco makes most sense if you work over something rather than back from a desk. Dentists, surgeons, dental hygienists, jewellers, musicians and lab technicians tend to take to it immediately, and we have written about why in our guides on the Capisco in healthcare and the Capisco for musicians. It also suits sit stand desk users, because the high gas lift models let you perch at standing height rather than fully standing.

It also comes up constantly with people who simply cannot sit still — who perch on the front edge, sit sideways or get up every twenty minutes. Our piece on the Capisco, movement and ADHD looks at that honestly, including what the research does and does not say, and why this is not an "ADHD chair".

Choosing a model

The 8106 is fully upholstered. The Capisco Puls 8010 and 8020 have a moulded plastic shell with a seat cushion: on the 8010 the cushion is integrated into the seat, and the 8020 adds an extra seat cushion for more sitting comfort. The 8106 and the Puls are about $900 apart, and our Capisco 8106 vs Capisco Puls comparison sets every published figure side by side and says exactly what that money buys — the short version is an adjustable backrest, a wider upholstered seat and more seat depth range on the 8106, against wipe-down cleaning and a cleanroom rating on the Puls.

Gas lift height matters: standard lifts suit conventional desk heights, and the 265 mm lift is the one to choose for a sit stand desk. A footring is worth adding on any high lift model. If you want to compare the models on the numbers, our HAG Capisco models and measurements page sets out the published dimensions for the Capisco and Capisco Puls models side by side.

The Capisco and the Capisco Puls do not share seat heights, and Flokk publishes them on separate factsheets in different units. If you are choosing a Puls, use the Capisco Puls gas lift guide rather than the Capisco one — not a single figure carries across.

If you are buying for a controlled environment, the Puls is the model to look at: the Capisco Puls 8010 and 8020 carry a cleanroom rating to ISO 14644 Class 4 and 5 — approved only with black antistatic vinyl — which qualifies them for laboratory, pharmaceutical, medical device and electronics work where most task chairs cannot be specified at all.

Give it a fortnight

The Capisco takes some getting used to, because it asks you to move rather than settle. Most people find the first few days unusual and then do not want to go back. Flokk's warranty covers production defects for 10 years on chairs in normal use for up to nine hours a day (5 years above that), with conditions set out on our warranty page. You can try it in Pyrmont.

Guides and buying advice

Read the gas lift guides before you order. It is the one decision that cannot be corrected later without replacing the cylinder.

Capisco 8106 or Capisco Puls?

They are about $900 apart, and the money buys three things on the 8106: a height-adjustable backrest, a wider fully upholstered seat, and more seat-depth range. The Puls 8010 and Puls 8020 give up those for a moulded shell you can wipe down, a lighter chair, and a cleanroom rating to ISO 14644 Class 4 and 5 in black antistatic vinyl, which is why the Puls is the one dentists, labs and pharmaceutical sites specify. If you sit for long stretches and want the back to support you, buy the 8106. If the chair will be shared, cleaned often, or used in a controlled environment, buy the Puls. Our 8106 vs Puls comparison sets every published figure side by side.

Choosing the gas lift

This is the one decision you cannot adjust away later. The standard 200 mm lift suits a conventional 72 to 75 cm desk. The 265 mm lift is the one to choose for a sit-stand desk, because it lets you perch at near-standing height rather than fully stand, and a footring or StepUp is worth adding with it. The 150 mm lift is for shorter users at low desks. The Capisco and the Capisco Puls do not share seat heights, so use the Capisco gas lift guide for the 8106 and the Puls gas lift guide for the 8010 and 8020. If in doubt, ring 02 9640 0642 with your desk height and we will tell you which lift.

Sit in a Capisco before you buy

The saddle position makes no sense in a photograph and complete sense after five minutes. The 8106 and the Puls are set up at our Pyrmont showroom by appointment.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a HÅG Capisco in Australia?

At Chair Dinkum the Capisco 8106 starts at $2,013.30 including GST against an RRP of $2,237, and the Capisco Puls 8010 and Puls 8020 start at $1,108.80 against an RRP of $1,232. Prices vary with gas lift height and fabric.

Is Chair Dinkum an authorised HÅG dealer?

Chair Dinkum is the exclusive Australian distributor for the Norwegian Flokk group, which owns HÅG. Capisco chairs, spare parts and warranty support for Australia come through us, and every chair is made at HÅG's factory in Røros.

What is the difference between the Capisco and the Capisco Puls?

The 8106 has a height-adjustable upholstered backrest, a wider upholstered seat and a greater seat-depth range. The Puls has a moulded polypropylene (PP) seat shell and backrest that wipe clean; it weighs less, and in black antistatic vinyl it carries an ISO 14644 cleanroom rating. The two do not share seat heights, so choose the gas lift from the guide for the model you are buying.

Which gas lift do I need for a standing desk?

The 265 mm lift, which takes the Capisco 8106 to a perching height that works at a raised sit-stand desk. Add the footring so your feet have somewhere to go. The standard 200 mm lift suits a fixed desk of 72 to 75 cm.

Is the HÅG Capisco good for back pain?

The saddle seat opens the hip angle and encourages an upright pelvis, which is why physiotherapists and dentists gravitate to it, and why it features in our guide to ergonomic chairs for back pain. It is a chair that asks you to move rather than one that holds you still, and it takes most people a week or two to settle into. If you have a diagnosed condition, sit in one at our showroom first.

What is the weight rating and warranty on the Capisco?

Flokk does not publish a user-weight rating for the Capisco or the Capisco Puls; its warranty applies to users up to 110 kg unless otherwise specified. Flokk's warranty covers material and manufacturing defects for 10 years on chairs in normal use for up to nine hours a day, or 5 years for chairs used more than nine hours a day; labour, transport and normal wear are not covered. Claims are handled by Chair Dinkum in Sydney. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Does the Capisco come with a headrest or armrests?

No. The Capisco is designed to be sat in from any direction, so a headrest and fixed armrests would defeat the point. The 8106 backrest is height-adjustable and doubles as a chest support when you sit astride the chair facing backwards.

Can I try the Capisco in Sydney?

Yes. The 8106 and the Puls are set up at our Pyrmont showroom, 1/209 Harris Street, open Monday to Friday by appointment on 02 9640 0642.
